I use PhotoShop Elements to edit and resize the images I post on my blogs. Occasionally I decide to push the elements beyond gently improving the color or composition or contrast. The above image is just resized to 900 pixels to make uploading faster. The next three images have been edited for contrast and/or brightness.

It is not unusual to see a few trees other than pines and firs decorated in peoples yards. But this one with the trunk and a few large limbs covered in lights look like a creature dancing in the yard. My attempt to take a long exposure without a tripd led to the squiggly lights and made the effect very odd.

I spotted this hawk early one morning while visiting our granddaughter in South Carolina. The sun was almost behind the hawk, leaving the details in the shadows. First I cropped the image, then little enhancement with PhotoShop brought out its markings and eye. I used fill flash and then added a contrast.

II took this shot of the early morning sun through a red stripe of our flag. I decided to play around with PhotoShop and see what images might result. First I played around with the Filter -> Distort -> Twirl to get the second image.

Then I applied the Filter -> Artistic -> Cutout to the original image.

And finally, I added Neon glow to the cutout image.

Every now and then I like to play around with the features of PhotoShop Elements. I took the above image about two weeks ago, cropped it and posted in on Lew's Favorites blog.

Then I played around with the Adjust Color effect. The image below has the red hue set to minus 110.

Then I ran the red hue to the other end of the spectrum (plus 80). Each effect started with a fresh copy of the cropped image. Changing the green and blue hue had little effect on this particular image.

And finally I applied the glowing edges effect, one of my favorites.

Dysfunctional Congress

This is generally a place for my images of the world as I see it. I have no pictures to illustrate the thoughts I had as I listened to the dueling "debt limit" speeches by the President and Speaker of the House last night, so here are the words.:

Our Congress has become totally dysfunctional! They have been slowly drifting into the abyss for a number of years as seen by the number of times the budget has been continuing resolutions to keep the government running. The current impasse is because some of our representatives say their oath to Grover Norquist overrides their oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. They are ready to declare bankruptcy when collectively we have the financial resources to pay our bills. Our debt is a growing problem that needs to be addressed. It should be resolved with judicial budgeting by Congress while making some hard choices.

Many (including the President, leaders of Congress and the media) blame "Washington" for the fiscal mess. They seem to forget that the City of Washington has no vote in these matters. The people in charge come from places like West Chester, Ohio; Searchlight, Nevada; Louisville, Kentucky; Richmond, Virginia; San Francisco, California; Springdale, South Carolina; Fargo, North Dakota; Frederick, Maryland and other small towns and large cities across this great land.

And finally a question: Where do these representatives think the money spent by the US Government goes? Somehow they think that if we take 1, 2 or 4 trillion dollars out of the economy, the people now getting tax breaks will magically spend even more money hiring millions of out of work citizens. That money ends up in someone's pay check or some businesses profit, either directly or when individuals receiving it buy food, clothes, medicine, cars, and toys for the kids, etc. etc.

Odd shots - Living dangerously

Last Thursday afternoon I spotted a somewhat larger bird than the usual cardinals, robins, catbirds and finches that entertain us. It looked like a hawk so I took a few shots through the widow and went outside to get some closer shots and it flew away. A little later I looked out again and there were 2 hawks, one in the birdbath and the other on the ground. So a few more photos and the hawks flew. Another 20 minutes and I noticed one hawk had returned AND a squirrel was heading for the birdbath for a drink. It then headed for the fence. (The squirrels think our split rail fence is an aerial tramway for their convenience.)

At the top of the post, SURPRISE! Squirrel made a quick retreat to hide on the lower rail. The hawk flew off to join its mate.

Odd Shots - Where are the wheels?

This may not be an odd shot in Yakima Valley, but it is in Maryland. John Deere tractors have wheels and this is the only John Deere crawler I have seen. In the 1940's John Deere shipped tractor chassis to the Lindeman brothers in Yakima where they were mounted on crawler tracks. The crawlers were preferred in the orchards as they were more stable on the hills. Later John Deere manufactured crawlers in its Dubuque factory. (Image taken May 2010 at the Gladhill Tractor Mart, Frederick, MD).

The above image was taken May 7 towards the sun over Carroll Creek. I got a bright reflection and dark silhouette of the city skyline. I used the levels command in PhotoShop Elements to adjust the range of dark and light tones in the image and got the image below which brought our details not visible in the normal image. A further adjustment of the color gave the dramatic third image.

The main creek really does run under the bridge seen just beyond the "35" sign. But with a lot of rain in a short period last Wednesday, water flowed down the near side of the flood plain. There is a culvert under the road where the water is flowing. The good news is that there was no damage and the road reopened Thursday afternoon.

Tax returns . . .

are in the mail. We sent some money to the US Treasury and the State of Maryland will return some to us. But as I worked my way through the forms and listened to the news this past couple of weeks, some issues seemed worthy of a few comments and questions.

Last year I reached the age of "Required Minimum Distribution" according to the Internal Revenue Service. This means those funds invested in 401(k) retirement arrangements begin to be taxable. And the IRS requires us to take out a little less than 4% the first year and a slightly higher percentage each year thereafter. This means we have more income (good news) and higher taxes (okay news). But another consequence is that the amount of Social Security (government retirement plan) that is taxed goes up (the bad news). There are 18 different forms (plus one "other") of income, some taxable, some not, some taxable under certain circumstances. I believe that taxes are necessary to fund the services that support the population in general, but it seems that income should be in two categories: "taxable" or "not taxable".

Can anyone explain the Alternate Minimum Tax in plain English? I have a little of the income and deductions that invoke the AMT. In the past, I got to step 12 of the worksheet with a 0 or negative amount and that meant no AMT was due. For 2010 the instructions say go directly to Form 6251 that takes 54 steps to reach the same conclusion. The AMT is the most convoluted form I have encountered, mainly because no explanation of the overall purpose is given.

General Electric created news when it was reported the company was paying no Federal taxes for 2010. Turns out that the report was premature, though GE acknowledged that the company does work to keep its taxes low (don't we all?). My question is why is "profit" reported to the IRS different than "profit" reported to shareholders? Is not someone being cheated? Apparently not, the law and accounting principles allow it.

In my opinion, our Congressional leaders, both Republican and Democrat, have been derelict in their duties the past few years, but especially for the past 12 months. To not have a budget in place when the year is over half-gone is absurd. They need to get back to working together to govern, and leave the politicking to the party chairmen.

Odd shots - Lightning

Ever try to focus in the dark on an object that is moving rapidly? Last Sunday night the sky gave us a light and sound show, so I decided to try a shot or two. I set my focus for out there a ways, set the exposure to 30 seconds and put the camera on the windowsill. The lightning was closer than I guessed and there were several flashes in the clouds in the distance.
